The Air Purifier
We all want to feel comfortable at home, but that goes beyond just temperature. We need to feel confident that the air we breathe is clean and healthy.
A popular solution to poor indoor air quality is the air purifier. This machine comes in both standalone and whole-home sizes and can act as a filter for the air inside your home.
Do They Work? Probably.
Many air purifier brands will certify that their product works at an extremely high level, but it’s hard to know how a certain device will work in your home.
Air purifiers work best for those who need them. If you suffer from allergies, have some four-legged friends running around, live in an area with high pollution levels, or have another factor impacting your air quality, you’ll likely see some benefit from installing an air purifier. Air purifiers won’t filter out bacteria or viruses in the air.
So if you don’t have one of these conditions impacting your indoor air quality, you may not be able to perceive a difference by using an air purifier.
Also, it’s important to consider other factors that may affect the effectiveness of your unit, such as airflow, temperature, and location of your home.
What to Look For
If you feel your air could use improvement, an air purifier may be the right choice. Start with a standalone unit, much like a dehumidifier in size/operation, and see if you notice a difference.
Investigate products yourself to see if they would be effective in your home. If a product has a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter, which is one of the best on the market, it’s likely effective at reducing indoor air pollutants.
At the end of the day, you need to trust yourself. Do you feel a difference? If not, play around with the unit’s location. If you still don’t feel a difference, it may be time to look for another solution.
